Taking the bold approach: Hawaiian shirts

The temptation during a heatwave is sometimes to forgo fashion and opt, instead, for simple, cooling styling. For guys, that more often than not involves a one-layer-wonder outfit consisting of a light t-shirt and shorts. Heat need not force you to sacrifice style though. Here’s why…

This summer has seen brands taking a bolder approach to summer styling, with the return of the Hawaiian shirt. While the short sleeved patterned shirt has quietly been the go to choice of students for some time, it is a look that is striking a chord with the fashion conscious gent this summer. Vibrant prints and open collars are a plenty among many designers’ collections, offering a taste of the islands to the masses, and anyone ready for a cool, late-night-in-the-med look.

Here’s our top picks:

  1. DSQUARED2 Hawaii Short Sleeve Shirt: This is the truest representation of the Hawaiian shirt on the list. Boasting an all over Hibiscus flower print set against a contrasting azure blue, the shirt is both vivid in its use of patter and colour and typical of the style in terms of silhouette. The sleeves sit loose of the shoulder dropping just above the elbow while the collar opens towards the top in the Cuban style. It’s a classic for brave summer styling, just as at home on the beach as in the city.

  1. Stussy Cloud and Birds Short Sleeve T-shirt: Stussy present an exciting take of the Hawaiian shirt this season. By mixing streetwear’s penchant for irony and subversion with a keen sense of style and cut, the brand has created a must have piece for the summer months. The shirt’s cloud and bird print is a long way from the logo driven origins of streetwear, but references it’s ability to appropriate ‘soft’ imagery for the streets. Think Supreme’s fondness for floral and paisley, or Y-3’s juxtaposition between architectural and flowing lines. This shirt is made for the inner city fashionista. Complete with the Cuban collar and relaxed cut this is a superb update on an iconic style.

  1. Ralph Lauren Hawaii Short Sleeved Oxford shirt: Ralph Lauren have reworked the Hawaiian shirt to sit effortlessly amongst their Ivy League styles for SS18. The short sleeved Hawaiian oxford shirt displays several influences from the classic Hawaiian style as well as pieces of wider America’s fashion heritage. The shirt’s embroidery adds the embellishment you’d normally associate with the style while paying homage to the needlework found on classic Vietnam era souvenir jackets. Partner these elements with the preppy button down collar found on an oxford shirt and you’re left with an instant Ralph Lauren hit. Dressed up or down this shirt is a highlight of the season.

  1. Replay Floral Print Short Sleeve Shirt: Replay’s contribution to the short sleeved shirt trend mixes an easy-going all over print with a more refined Italian cut. This piece is simple but effective, opting for only two block colours, blue and white to compliment the carefully detailed cut. This is the first pocketed shirt on the list and features a regular collar. For the man who prefers classic cuts but wishes to step out in print this is the shirt of the season.

  1. Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Leopard Print Shirt: No seasonal style list would be complete without the uninhibited genius of Vivienne Westwood. The Anglomania leopard print shirt is a perfect example of the playfulness of the short sleeved shirt trend. Though not a traditional Hawaiian print, the leopard spots on a blue backdrop is a tasteful rendition of a traditionally garish print. Complete with two military style chest pockets Westwood stays true to form subverting traditional styles and bringing a sense of fun to them.
