When Do Brits Need a Coat?

It is 2018 and with the new year, shops around the UK are thinking ahead to spring. It is the most popular time of year to book a holiday for sun worshiping Brits and it seems they can almost taste the ice cream.

However, a quick check of the monthly average UK temperatures shows there are still another three months of what could be classed as ‘coat weather’ left:

  • In January, the average UK temperature is a chilly 5°C… Definite coat weather.
  • February’s average temperature is in line with January’s, at 5°C… A coat is a must.
  • Then in March, the average UK temperature is a cool 6°C… Yes, still coat weather.
  • Come April, this rises a few degrees to 9°C… Don’t get caught without a coat in those April showers!
  • By the time May arrives, the average UK temperature reaches double figures for the first time in the year, at 12°C. Even so, a lighter jacket is recommended for cooler parts of the day.

Types of coats

In the colder winter months, from November to March, a thicker and more padded coat is recommended. Insulated jackets are ideal for those who really feel the cold during autumn and winter.

In fact, some coats have the ability to keep you warm in temperatures as low as -25°C. Canada Goose coats for example are used to battle some of the harshest conditions on earth, making them the ideal choice for these colder months.

In mid to late Spring, around April/May time, a slightly thinner and lighter coat is recommended. Despite lighter coats and jackets being less insulated, they add layers to your outfit to keep you warm at cooler parts of the day. Some lightweight coats, such as many by Barbour, offer waterproof protection ideal for the unpredictable British weather.

Chris Bevan, Head of Multi-Channel at Tessuti commented:

“Whilst many are thinking ahead to warmer months, we understand that there’s still another three months of coat wearing weather to go. We have reflected this in our ranges, stocking many high performance designer branded coats, including those by Canada Goose, Parajumpers and Pyrenex.”

“When April time comes we recommend transitioning to lighter outerwear, for a style that can transfer comfortably from winter to spring.”

Although the peak summer months of late June to August might largely be coatless, waterproof lightweight jackets are often a wardrobe staple, especially given the rainy summers of recent.

The lighter coats of Spring also come in use in early Autumn, around September and October, when the warmth of summer quickly becomes a distant memory and Brits face the reality that there’s a long wait ahead for the t shirt weather to come back around.
