Highlights From London Fashion Week Men’s Day 1

London Fashion Week Men’s has arrived. Here are our top picks from the first day, featuring ART SCHOOL, Bobby Abley, ICEBERG and St-Henri.

ART SCHOOL is known for blurring the lines between menswear and womenswear to create a fresh take on contemporary dressing. Founded in 2017, ART SCHOOL was first shown at LFWM as part of Fashion East’s menswear presentation and has continued to grow as a brand. For their AW18 show, the theme was inclusivity with a diverse range of models, including male and female, young and old. The pieces were designed with the idea that the models are en route to the opera, with flowing silhouettes sitting alongside boxy jackets to give a feeling of elegance and opulence which contrasted with striking hair and makeup, including glitter beards and hair sculptures. The colour palette was striking, with acid pink and cobalt blue which was offset with gold and silver to give a luxuriously fun feeling to the collection. This is a menswear brand for the bold, with models gliding down the runway in a powerful and unpredictable fashion. A great way to kick of London Fashion Week Men’s.

Bobby Abley

Bobby Abley was founded in 2012 and is instantly recognisable for clothing that is playful yet contemporary. Abley manages to master the blend of humour and craftsmanship perfectly to create stand out pieces. This AW19 collection was no different. Abley revisits his childhood with standout clothing featuring Pokemon motifs throughout the collection – on a poncho and a backpack amongst other pieces. As soon as the show started, it was immediately apparent that this was going to be fun. Walking down the runway was an array of fluorescent sportswear-inspired clothing with a twist. Fabrics like corduroy and vinyl were used alongside technical fabrics which featured repeat patterns that covered the garments. In a final surprise ending, a giant Pikachu appeared for the closing spot and acted as almost a mascot for the show. This was a show that was full of fun and surprises and we can’t wait to see what Abley comes up with next.

Established in 1974 this Italian- American brand has a unique approach to menswear by creating formal casual wear. The clothing has echoes of pop art to give a youthful feeling with pops of colour. For their AW19 collection, creative director, James Long, is inspired by the Italian Alps. Knit hoodies sit alongside high-vis acid green looks which would turn heads on the slopes for all the right reasons. With Apres Ski in mind, the looks are sporty yet sophisticated, taking you from the slopes to the streets. Injections of graphic patterns and Mickey Mouse motifs feature on the pieces which depict the fun of Apres Ski but paired with sleek polo necks, the collection feels effortlessly sophisticated. If the Apres Ski style is something that you want to add into your wardrobe, then stay tuned for something exciting from Tessuti coming very soon.

St-Henri is a brand that is inspired by American fantasies that are characteristic of French-Canadian culture. Taking reference from music, literature, and visual arts, this brand creates clothing through conceptual ideas to give a timeless feel to the collections. The AW19 presentation depicted fashion in the everyday. The set was a living room with a nostalgic feel. Minimal interiors were matched with clothing that was clean and minimal. Away from the city, this collection has a feeling of a youth spent in the countryside before the internet and social media. Knit cardigans, slim jeans and over shirts appear in a neutral colour palette with a small pop of colour to give a contemporary yet wholesome feel to the collection. St-Henri celebrates wearable, capsule clothing and encourages paired back styling to give a collection that feels so timeless. We love it.
