Paris Fashion Week Men’s: AMI Paris AW20 Show

Our second venture in to Paris Fashion week took us to the edge of the city’s famed Pigalle district. An area known for its diversity and youthful energy, it seemed the perfect setting for one of the week’s headline acts. It was of course the much anticipated AMI Paris Fall/Winter 2020 show.

With Alexandre Mattiussi’s eponymous label being a firm favourite at Tessuti HQ as well Paris, there was a real buzz in the air as we approached the venue, Le Trianon. The unassuming building houses a traditional Parisian theatre with ornate embellishment. The design takes obvious inspiration from Baroque motifs found across the French capital’s architecture. And celebrating the brand’s 9th anniversary on home soil in such extravagant quarters certainly persuaded guests to arrive early. The queues built as fashion fans fought their way in.

Once inside it was clear that this was going to be a strictly French affair with the arrival of an accordion player to usher in the beginning of the show. With a dramatic contemporary take on the sounds of classical French cinema the soundtrack created real tension. It was a total juxtaposition to the soft tailoring about to make its way down the runway. And it was precisely that feminine tailoring that really dominated the collection.

In tonal colourways the collection presented gentle lines and experimentally delicate takes on the strong Parisian textile tradition. Wool overcoats and chemise jackets found themselves floating over sheer mid-layers complete with ruffled shirting while slung knitted scarves provided pronounced detailing. It was a collection of true maturity. The crowd’s approval grew as one by one the models made their way around the room , until at the end the designer was met with rapturous applause. Mattiussi has come a long way and shows no signs of stopping. This truly is a collection to look out for.
