Raf Simons x Fred Perry launch

In contemporary fashion there are few held in as high regard as Raf Simons. The Belgian designer has forged a reputation for not only pressing at, but completely re positioning the seams of European fashion time and time again, having first burst on to the scene over two decades ago. Such an esteemed status can be attributed to his youthful vision of high fashion; A vision inspired by the machinations of subculture, and one that he has lent to numerous brands over the course of his career, resulting in an acclaimed collaborative portfolio. In fact, it seems his work is often at it’s best when working with, or against, the mission statements of established fashion houses.

His latest venture into collaborative design comes in the form of a capsule collection with British heritage brand Fred Perry for SS18. Taking subculture as inspiration, the designer has created range of pieces defined by the juxtaposing themes of counter cultural resistance, conformity, exclusivity and inclusivism, which are of importance both to Simons’ own creative imagination and Fred Perry’s brand history.

In celebration of the collection’s release Fred Perry have released accompanying imagery that begins to demonstrate the influences that were involved in the design process. Crude collaging and photographic manipulation of colour set the tone of the lo-fi shoot which authentically encompasses the murky worlds of UK subculture that has recently obsessed the fashion industry, and Simons particularly.

The clothing itself, references several disparate subcultural movements, from punk to acid house, with absolute clarity and relative simplicity. The makeshift appearance of the designs taps in to the democratic DIY roots of most of Britain’s most iconic movements and hits the dressed down, street-style trend for SS18. It also allows for a bold new aesthetic for Fred Perry. Silhouettes synonymous with the brand, such as the polo shirt and the crew neck t-shirt find themselves reinvented in block colour and contrasting detailing. It truly is a brave collection with an astonishing outcome.

At Tessuti, we’re lucky to stock this huge collaboration. It will be available from the 15th of February 2018 online and in selected stores across the UK. Don’t miss out a true meeting of fashion greats, get yours.
