What to wear to Wimbledon

What to wear to Wimbledon

There is a strict dress code at Wimbledon for the players. It’s the strictest dress code of all the major Grand Slams in tennis. They must wear white and nothing else. Remember in 2015 the uproar when women’s Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard wore a black bra strap during her first-round defeat to China’s Ying-Ying Duan? Scandalous. Shocking. Unforgivable. So, if players have strict rules to abide by, then you’d imagine there are strict rules for the spectators, too. But in truth, recent years have seen the notoriously stringent rules relax a little, however there are still some items on the banned list. Official rules state that torn/ripped jeans, running vests, dirty trainers and sports shoes are banned for debenture ticket holders but other than that anything goes for the general public (unless you’re in the Royal Box or a member its formal wear only). Here’s some outfit inspiration for this year’s Wimbledon.

Women
The best way to go would be to keep things classy and keep things simple. Loud and garish outfits are always going to stand out like a sore thumb at Wimbledon. The general rule of thumb for women is nothing too short and nothing too tight. Ultimately, you’re at the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, so it would be fitting to make an effort. It’s summer, so dresses and skirts for those warm London days in SW19 are par for the course and t-shirts, long-sleeved t-shirts, vests are way to go, too. Just don’t forget your sunglasses.

Men
Gentlemen in the members area are required to wear lounge suit or tailored jacket, shirt, tie, shoes… the full works. Assuming you’re not a member, those rules don’t apply. You won’t be able to go far wrong with a shirt or t-shirt, a lightweight pair of trousers or jeans and some smarter shoes or trainers. Again, keep things simple. Shirts are ideal because you can roll the sleeves up or unbutton when it’s hot or you can wear a t-shirt underneath for an extra layers if the weather turns or a when a match runs into the long into the evening.
