Wimbledon 2019: Week One Round-Up

The 133rd Wimbledon Championships is in full swing and there have been some brilliant matches already at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Here are some of the highs and lows from the first week of Wimbledon.

Despite Andy Murray’s absence in the singles this year, he is back and fighting fit and ready to keep on playing in the doubles with his new partner, Serena Williams.

Last year saw Novak Djokovic win the gentlemen’s singles title and this year, he is the favourite to take the trophy home again. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are also contenders for the prize. In the past year Djokovic has won the Australian Open and wants to continue with his winning streak at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

This year the women’s favourite is Serena Williams – closely followed by Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep. Surprisingly, last years’ women’s victor, Angelique Kerber, fell in just the second round after a comforting victory in the first.

Being number one in the world doesn’t appear to be weighing Ashleigh Barty down. A tactical player, who plays up on the baseline with deep concentration on her face at all times. At only 5 foot 5 inches tall she is a true tennis champion and we believe she was born for this!

So far, Serena Williams has managed to beat Julia Gorges in the third round and continues to get better with each match. During the game, her angelic serves had a great rhythm that helped her in her success.

The big three, Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have all survived on the men’s side. Yet again, our expectations have been exceeded as we have watched them conquer their competition this week. At this stage it is hard to imagine any one of those three not winning the title.

When it comes to the women, we see an open contest. Right now, we think that Serena is the player to beat – That is if she keeps on serving the ball up like she did for Gorges!

We hope you are enjoying Wimbledon 2019 as much as we are.
