Your New Years Resolutions and How to Achieve Them

Your New Years Resolutions and How to Achieve Them

The New Year has officially arrived. Many of us are now back to work and that January feeling is upon us. This is make or break time. You made all your New Year’s Resolutions, but can you stick to them? Around 50% of people tend to fail at keeping at least one of their New Year’s Resolutions, so how do you stick to them?

Setting your New Years Resolutions

First things first: you need to establish a brief overview of what you want to achieve. Then you can refine these further as you work through our guide. If you’re struggling to set yourself resolutions or feel overwhelmed by all the things you want to achieve this year, then it can be useful to split these up into categories. You can choose to focus on things like:

  • Yourself (e.g. healthy eating, working out more etc)
  • Your career (e.g. gain a promotion, find a different career path)
  • Your living situation (e.g. moving to a new city, moving out for the first time)
  • Your finances (e.g. saving for a deposit, paying off debts)
  • Relationships and Friendships (e.g. socialising more, building more friendships)
  • Your time (e.g. spend less time watching TV and more time reading etc)

You can even create a short term section just for what you hope to achieve in January. These short term goals will really help to motivate you when you start seeing results much sooner than you would with more long-term goals.

Making Achievable Goals

The biggest thing about setting yourself any goals or resolutions is that they must be achievable. If they’re too far-fetched or difficult, you’re already setting yourself up for failure and you’ll end up giving up in the first week. When writing down your goals, make sure to read back over them and evaluate how achievable they are and what you’re going to do to achieve them. Even if your goal might seem simple such as “eating healthier”, you need to think “how am I going to achieve this” and clearly define that to yourself. Which moves us onto our next point.

New Year Resolutions

Define how you will achieve your resolutions

As mentioned, you need to come up with a clear plan of how you’re going to achieve your New Years Resolutions. For each resolution, come up with a plan of how you’re going to achieve them. If you want to exercise more, exactly how are you going to do this? Figure out a workout routine that you can stick to and workout what times of the week you can go and how often you can go. You’ll also need to work out any potential roadblocks. Using the same example of exercising more, it might be that you get overwhelmed at the gym and don’t know what to do – so you need to work out how you’ll overcome that. This might include speaking to a personal trainer or asking for help from a member of staff. Accounting for any problems along the way will help you so much in achieving your New Years Resolutions.

Set Timescales

It’s important to set timescales for each resolutions so you can check that you’re on track. Ensure you make some long term and some short term goals so you’re not trying to achieve everything at once. It’s also a good idea to start some resolutions later than others so you don’t overwhelm yourself. You could start progress on one resolution in January, and then another in February, by which point you’ll have had time to build a habit for your January goals and get yourself into a routine.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is an essential to achieving any New Years Resolutions as it affects so many, if not every, aspect of your life. If you’re looking to exercise more, you need the energy, strength and endurance built up from sleep; if you’re looking to get a promotion at work, you need to have the motivation, productivity and focus that sleep gives you; even if you’re looking to quit smoking, you might be surprised at how much sleep can affect your nicotine dependancy. If you’re looking to get a good night sleep, try relax and unwind at least an hour before you intend to go to sleep.
